Hello Pack 495 Cub Scout Parents,

Pack 495 Christmas Tree RecyclingI am working to make this year’s Christmas Tree Recycling Fundraiser even more successful than last year and I’m asking for every family’s participation. Last year we had a good return for a couple of days work. This year, we have more Scouts, and I am only asking each Scout’s family to deliver up to 100 collection envelopes (you can deliver more if you like) so we have the potential to collect even more trees and donations. I am also asking that each family attached the rubber bands to the envelopes.

This is an important fundraiser because it helps fund the Pack’s budget and allows us to do more than the typical Scouting Program. Among other things, its allows the Pack to rent Campgrounds for Pack Camp-outs, purchase necessary equipment like Dutch Ovens for cooking (Webelos Cast Iron Chef Adventure), purchase fun patches for events, and its supplements the Popcorn Fundraiser if necessary. In addition to the tree collection, I would like to spend some time doing a trash collection around the front of the Maplewood Heights School Grounds and across the street on the sidewalk after or during the collection time. I will be sending out a Sign-up Genius email soon so you can volunteer for one of the “jobs” needed on collection day.

Here are the other details.

  • Delivery Target Date: Weekend of December 17th & 18th (I would like to see them delivered by December 21st at the latest so they don’t get lost in the holiday, deliver half one day and half the next if necessary)
  • Collection Date/Time: January 7 (always the first Saturday in January) starts with 9am meeting at Maplewood Heights and continues until we’re finished. (We’ll take collections at the school until we are finished or 12PM, whichever is later)
  • Each Scout Family Unit delivers up to 100 envelopes (or more if desired, I have other areas that we can collect from if you are willing – Please let me know if you want to do more, we can team up)
  • Each Scout Family Unit attached rubber bands to envelopes before delivery and attaches envelope to front door of house
  • 100 Envelopes will go a long way if they are targeted to obvious Christmas celebrating houses. When in doubt deliver an envelope, but if there is an obvious reason that the house does not celebrate Christmas, skip the house
  • Please bring extra, undelivered envelopes back to the school on collection day and they can be used again next year
  • ***Do Not deliver envelopes to USPS Mailboxes*** Use front door only
  • Assignment delivery area will be given at December Pack Meeting – I do my best to give you your own neighborhood with older Scouts taking priority if there is overlap. Please let me know ASAP afterwards if there is a problem
  • Track deliveries on assigned area map and bring map to the 9am Meeting at the school on Collection Day. I recommend using a smart phone app like MapMyHike to track where you walked, then transfer the information to the paper map. Your map tracking will allow us to retrace your steps and collect the trees from the areas where envelopes were delivered and avoid missing trees and donations
  • This is also a Service Project. We are doing a service for the community by collecting their trees and disposing of them properly
  • We are taking the trees to Sunset Materials instead of the Kent Parks in Covington. This will be much more convenient.

Watch for Sign-Up Genius email.

If we all Do Our Best, this will be another great success,

Jeremy Peery
